No choice

Spending the winters in Marion NC is so wonderful except I am out of touch with the world. There are two choices for internet connection, Verizon dial up or Hughs satelite. Dial up is so slow and with three of us online it is out of the question. Satelight is very expensive and also with all of us on line we gobble up our daily usage limit in about 45 minutes. I can't do business on line and certainly can't be spontaneous and stay connected to vendors, clients and information. Uploading and downloading has to be done at 3AM when the connection is unlimited. Its pitiful that this country has to be so far behind the rest of the world mainly due to greed and control.

Try this on for size:

Looking at the map of NC, some towns are close enough to run a single fiber line from Marion to another town. Select another town where access to better speeds is available and run a fiber line to that town (costly but only needs doing once.) Now do the deals needed to put traffic on your fiber line. Depending how many people live in your area, and how spread out, you can try to hook up everyone over that single fiber line - by connecting your neighbors with ethernet or wireless (that you install for yourselves.)

Another way to do the same thing is use a tower to wirelessly connect to another tower in a place with better access. On the map, Morganton is about 16 miles away; that's doable.

Or you can wire yourselves up locally (see http://communityfiber.org) and buy bulk internet access for everyone in your town on one truly high-speed land line that everyone uses.
