North Carolina Town Hall Meeting in Durham

North Carolina on the Future of America’s Internet

150 people joined the InternetforEveryone.org initiative in North Carolina on Saturday, March 7, for the second in our series of town hall meetings for a better Internet in the United States.

The North Carolina meeting featured inspiring speakers, short documentary-style films and small group conversations with individuals from communities throughout the state.

Together, we looked at what kind of Internet we want and how we all can share in its benefits. Our recommendations from the meeting will support a national broadband framework for leaders in Washington.

Background

The United States has fallen to 22nd place in the world today in high-speed Internet adoption, while American consumers face high prices and few choices.

Making the country’s high-speed Internet services competitive with our overseas counterparts would translate into hundreds of thousands of new jobs, better education and training, and billions of dollars in increased economic activity.

But closing the “digital divide” is a national challenge that must be faced by everyone. New leadership in Washington must follow our lead and bring open, high-quality, affordable Internet connections into every home and business.

This requires a comprehensive and innovative approach – with input from government, businesses, nonprofit organizations and public advocates, civic groups, churches and schools. InternetforEveryone.org is ensuring that everyone plays a part.
